Veteran competitor bosses rivals for his second stage win
Hong Kong continued to dominate the Tour of South China Sea yesterday as four-time winner, Wong Kam-po won the fourth stage with ease.
Just two days ago, Wong took the Shenzhen stage while his teammate Wu Kin-sun won the first and third legs in Hong Kong and Foshan respectively. Wu was less successful yesterday, finishing 23rd but he still retained the yellow jersey. However, Wong, the top local rider of the past decade, sealed his second stage win of the tour when he shot past Zahit Mohd Sayuti from Malaysia and Taiji Nishitani in the last 300 metres to dash across the finish line. Sayuti came second and Nishitani was third.
Wong's victory, in a time of two hours, seven minutes and one second over the 105 kilometre course at Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Centre, continued the trend of Hong Kong stage winners in the eight-day event.
'I am glad that our team can maintain its leading position in the tour,' Wong said.
'I know other teams will speed up to catch us from the next stage onwards. What I really hope to see is that our co-operation and unity will keep us in contention.'
The Hong Kong team are regarded as strong contenders for the overall title as cycling powerhouses in Asia, such as Russia and Uzbekistan, did not send any athletes this year.
