I REFER to Mariefe Barce's letter headlined, ''All HK people must pitch in'' (South China Morning Post, October 21).
I agree with the correspondent that people are paying too little attention to pollution in Hong Kong.
I think the Government should impose strict controls over those industries which choke our skies with smoke, pour untreated waste into the river and cause excessive noise. They should not be allowed to pollute our environment. More officers should be employed to check whether or not industrialists follow the law.
The Government should also carry out more long-term programmes to educate the public to keep Hong Kong clean. When looking at a model to follow, I would pick Singapore. There, people are compelled to keep the city clean.
Both the Government and the citizens of Hong Kong should work together to carry out anti-pollution laws. If we do not, pollution will get worse.
