What: A global non-government organisation, Greenpeace aims to expose worldwide environmental problems and force solutions through research, lobbying and non-violent actions. The group does not accept donations from governments, corporations or political parties to ensure independence. Greenpeace China, established in Hong Kong in 1997, has more than 40,000 local donors and supporters.
Volunteer: Arain Yu Yan-wai, 25, has been doing volunteer work for Greenpeace China since 2003, when he was a final year student at Polytechnic University.
'Many people are merely concerned about matters that relate directly to them. But I wanted to learn more about global issues and think environmental protection is a highly meaningful topic. In 2003, I started by working in Greenpeace's fund-raising department and helped prepare gatherings for members.
At the time, US-led attacks on Iraq had just begun, so I joined an action team that projected an anti-war slogan on the bow of a US Navy warship moored off Ma Wan. I mainly helped with the logistics and kept the projector steady, as the waves were quite strong.
