A Taiwanese percussionist died after falling from the stage during pop singer Chi Chin's New Year's Eve concert at the Workers' Stadium in Beijing.

Huang Chien-fu, 36, had joined the singer on stage to perform a duet of Chi's most popular song, Return in Winter. Huang climbed up a ladder and promptly fell off, but Chi did not see the fall and continued singing.

By the time Chi had finished the song, he was aware that Huang had fallen - but still gave a bow.

The singer said at hospital in the capital yesterday morning that it had not been planned for Huang to join him on stage and therefore he had not taken part in the show rehearsal.

'It was originally a very happy thing for us to spend New Year's Eve performing together. He was very happy all through the concert, too,' said Chi.

'I never would have expected such an accident could happen while he was singing with me. We all feel very sad.
