I recently read a letter by Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun addressed to Hong Kong teenagers.

Ms Law uses the example of Henry Wanyoike - the world famous blind athlete - to motivate us to be  confident and optimistic.  When we face difficulties and adversities, we should try to overcome them bravely.

Life is like a long-distance  race - you should try your best to finish it to the best of your abilities.

Daily struggles and successes  build you into a worthy person.

Thanks for your letter, Brian. The beginning of the year is always a good time to think about what you want to achieve in the year ahead.

While results are important, the process is the key. So rather than simply saying I want to get great grades this year, perhaps set yourself targets that will help you get there. For example, you might set yourself the goal of finishing your homework before watching TV, or else to do a little revision each week so that you don't have a mad rush just before the exams.

Perseverance is the key to reaching your goal, so don't be disheartened if you have setbacks. I've made three New Year's resolutions. It's been nearly a week and I've managed to keep them so far - another 51 weeks to go!
