Seeing how frugal our dear leader Donald Tsang Yam-kuen is, we are glad to report that renovation works - costing taxpayers a mere $14.5 million - to make Government House livable for the First Couple, are well within budget. In fact, I was told by the chief spokeswoman for Mr Tsang's office that my 'characterisation' was not accurate. 'About $9.5 million was budgeted for the chief executive's office. Only $5 million was for refurbishing the buildings,' she told LoDown, as in for the couple's creature comforts. So, $5 million for fixing old air-cons, flooring, tiles, ceilings, cabinets and the bathroom - that's peanuts! While no exact date has been announced, they expect to move in before the Lunar New Year. It's not clear what has happened to those stately tennis courts, where generations of colonial governors and their offspring practised their strokes. 'I have never been there,' says Donald's spokeswoman. Well, shame to say, neither have I.
