A record number of people sat down last night to a pun choi feast featuring fish, meat and vegetables from the New Territories. About 14,000 people filled 1,100 tables at $1,800 a table.
It was the third such feast organised by the catering, fishing and farming industries and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department at the Tamar site, with the profit going to the Girl Guides Association. The first year filled 626 tables, the second 828.
About 200 tourists from the mainland, Japan and Southeast Asia were among the diners.
Giant grouper were the highlight. 'The giant groupers used in the feast are all [bred] in local fish farms,' said Liu Kwei-kin, the department's assistant director.
'The environment under which these groupers are raised is carefully monitored by our department. These are not wild giant groupers hunted in the ocean, and there are no harmful effects on the ecosystem.
'More importantly, all groupers are tested. They are high-quality products which are safe for consumption.
