IN your report (South China Morning Post, November 25), on the proceedings in the Legislative Council on November 24, the Secretary for Transport, Mr Haider Barma, is quoted as saying that ''it is perhaps unrealistic to expect the (Mid-Levels) escalator to reduce substantially the volume of traffic flow''.

It is interesting to recall the comments of his predecessors and other colleagues when, in the past, they were justifying the far from insubstantial cost of installing the escalator.

Then they argued that the escalator would encourage people to leave their cars at home, reduce demand for bus services and thus relieve the traffic congestion.
