Operator returns to the sector with offers of free six-month trials and 3G handsets

PCCW, which exited the city's margin-crushing mobile-phone market three years ago, rejoined the fray yesterday with a branded 3G service it hopes to start by the middle of the year using the network of listed subsidiary Sunday Communications.

In its push to lure customers in the highly competitive, six-player market, the company is offering six month free trials and free handsets for its 'PCCW mobile' service.

Chief financial officer Alex Arena said yesterday that 79.53 per cent-owned Sunday would now only sell a 2G service, while retaining the 3G licence and network.

PCCW will resell Sunday's 3G service, making it off-limits to the subsidiary it failed to privatise last month. Sunday will still sell 3G handsets.

The move will not affect the position of Sunday chief executive Bruce Hicks.
