Sun's star rises

It would be no exaggeration - although, perhaps, a terrible pun - to describe Nick Sun as the fastest-rising star in stand- up comedy.

After dropping out of university, the 24-year-old tried his luck on stage three years ago. Within 12 months he'd won Australia's national Raw Comedy competition, earning a trip to Scotland's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where he promptly triumphed in the prestigious So You Think You're Funny contest that has launched the careers of performers such as Peter Kay and Tommy Tiernan. That's no mean achievement for any comic.

Sun also has unusual heritage, being an ethnic Tibetan. But he isn't one of those comics who plays on his roots, with gags about being an alien struggling to find his place in a foreign culture.

'I want to get away from that,' says Sydney-born Sun, who makes his Hong Kong debut as part of next week's Fringe Club City Festival. 'In fact, I have a lot of stuff making fun of what people expect me to do,' says Sun, who has one set devoted to deconstructing the traditional 'ethnic comedy' act.

Although his parents hail from Darjeeling in northern India, Sun didn't have their native language or culture passed on to him as he grew up in Australia, and he says he doesn't feel Asian. He admits his Asian appearance can be an extra hurdle when he performs before a new audience, but says the material is what he's ultimately judged on.

'There's a certain level of mistrust you can feel on stage,' says Sun, who has recently spent six months on the London comedy circuit. 'But as long as you're funny they don't care who you are or where you're from.'

With several one-man shows under his belt, Sun has plenty of material to choose from, but says he's still honing his act for his City Festival performances, which will last up to an hour. This is double the 30-minute slots he's used to at comedy clubs, where several comics share the bill.
