TO outsiders, the task of keeping track of the millions of electrical power outlets in Hong Kong seems daunting, if not impossible.

Not to the Hong Kong Electric Co, however.

With its state-of-the-art computer mapping system, the company knows exactly where each power supply and building location is and can identify who to inform in the event of a power shutdown for repairs.

The mapping system is on display at the science and technology pavilion, along with videos of the latest technologies being harnessed by the company.

At the environment pavilion, the company is showing its most up-to-date power plant, which incorporates advanced technology to reduce pollution into its design.

''We need boilers to generate electricity and we burn coal,'' public affairs manager Juliana Ma explained. ''The Flue Gas Desulphurisation plant can reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide by up to 90 per cent.'' Only one of six plants at the company's Lamma Power Station has the new technology, which has only become available in recent years.
