A VIBRANT ECONOMY is expected to create many new opportunities in the finance sector this year, opening the way for more experienced professionals to make their next career move and for fresh graduates to get their first big break.

A career option that provides a great deal of variety and demands all-round knowledge of the industry is that of media spokesman or spokeswoman for a major financial institution. Usually, people in this line of work begin in sales or research.

Conita Hung took the latter route after initially gaining experience in the media industry, and she is now one of the most recognised names in Hong Kong's financial circles and head of equity sales for Delta Asia Financial Group.

Ms Hung started out as a business reporter and rose to become the finance editor of a respected newspaper. However, she felt somewhat constrained in that role and wanted more hands-on involvement in the financial world.

'I needed more analytical skills, so I enrolled at the London School of Economics and did a master's degree in economics,' she said.

After returning from London, Ms Hung turned down various offers from media companies and focused on her primary goal.

'I targeted stock brokerages as the place to start as I felt my skills would be appreciated there,' she said.
