Splendid Isolation

(Love Da Records)

A quirky little recording from a quirky little Hungarian, Splendid Isolation is the kind of release you might wish you'd shoved into someone special's Christmas stocking. It has crept into local stores with little fanfare, but deserves a real trumpeting.

Yonderboi (Laszlo Fogerasi) is a hard man to pin down. He jumps from ambient to hip-hop, electronica to smooth pop. This outing offers less of the laid-back chill of his 2000 debut, Shallow and Profound, and although there are low points - most notably the tired Eyes for You - by the time he's into his groove on the funky Follow Me Home, they're forgotten.

Surprises abound. People Always Talk About the Weather raises the tempo, and echoes Brit-pop, complete with driving riff and snarly lyrics, while he somehow manages to take the Doors' brooder Love Hides to the dance floor.
