CARREY'S HIGHLIGHTS

The Mask (1994)

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective propelled Carrey to fame, but his peculiar style of comedy - which thrives on his fluid physical movements and wacky facial expressions - found its place in The Mask. He plays Stanley Ipkiss, a meek and much-bullied bank clerk who finds a mask that transforms him into a manic, green-faced Valentino- cum-superhero.

Batman Forever (1995)

Carrey stole the show from Val Kilmer, Nicole Kidman and Tommy Lee Jones with yet another gurning turn, this time as the Riddler, a computer engineer-turned-devil who wants to turn the population of Gotham into zombies. The film may not rank with some of the Batman movies of yore, but Carrey's turn consolidated his appeal on a massive scale.

The Truman Show (1998)

Undoubtedly one of Carrey's best performances - and it's not even a comedy. Peter Weir's social satire on the American fascination with reality TV, The Truman Show stars Carrey as an insurance salesman who slowly realises the picture-perfect world he's living in is just a big set, and his life the focus of a TV show. Not a face-pulling trick in sight, but Carrey oozes a heartbreaking sincerity that proved him to be far more than Dumb and Dumber.
