HONG Kong were quick to get off the mark at the World Wushu Championships currently being held in Kuala Lumpur, with a six-medal haul in the first three days of competition.

Movie stunt star Li Fai captured the limelight when she lived up to her reputation as the world's number one woman cudgel player, by scoring 9.21 points to win the gold.

The 23-year-old edged Malaysia's Ng Choo Bee by 0.03 of a point, while teammate Tsui Lim-chee shared third place with Jennifer Yeo of the Philippines. Both Tsui and Yeo scored 9.13 points.

Li took up the cudgel as her long weapon event only after a setback at the 1990 Beijing Asian Games when she was performing with the spear.

It was the China-born Li's second medal at the championships. She collected a bronze in the sword event on the first day, scoring 9.35 points to take third place behind China's Liu Qinghua (9.76) and teammate Ng Siu-ching (9.48).

Ng also won a bronze medal in the spear routine for which she scored 9.40 and finished behind Chinese favourite Wei Dantong and Singapore's Chew Hui Yan.

Hong Kong's other medal came from nanquan exponent Leung Yat-ho, a very disappointing third in the men's competition to China's He Qiang and Malaysia's Phoon Chee Kong.
