Beware of roving EPS con men
The public has been urged not to disclose their personal account information and PINs at outdoor or street-level promotions.
EPS said yesterday it had received reports from customers of roving promoters encouraging potential customers to pay by EPS through an on-site terminal.
'Customers were asked to provide the ATM/credit card and enter the PIN for processing and received receipts,' a spokesman for the cashless payment system operator said. 'However, EPS can confirm that these fraudulent operators are not registered for EPS service and these false transactions were not recorded in the EPS system.'
The operator said it had never offered EPS service to any merchants conducting roving promotions and had reported the incidents to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and police.
The spokesman said he would not divulge more details about the case as it is under investigation by police.
The company urged any customers who might have disclosed personal account information or PINs to any suspected fraudulent operators to contact their card-issuing bank or EPS on 2733 0500.
