Speaking at the Association of Women Accountants (Hong Kong) on Wednesday night, CLP managing director Betty Yuen So Siu-mai cited the chauvinist canard that a smart woman plays dumb for her significant other so as not to upstage him.
'I don't have to pretend but I always can't find my car in the car park,' Mrs Yuen joked.
'No wonder my husband treats me so well.'
At the same event Inland Revenue commissioner Alice Mak Yee-ming rebutted media chatter that the number of secretary posts occupied by women suggests there is a so-called 'handbag gang' cabal ruling the Lower Albert Road roost.
'If you look at the list of directorial grade officials, only 24 per cent are women,' she said. 'It doesn't justify the title of 'handbag gang.''
