Updated at 5.22pm: A man detained on a drug trafficking charge has swallowed at least 11 packets of heroin, a Correctional Services Department spokesman revealed on Friday. The spokesman said the 54-year-old detainee, surnamed Yiu, later separately discharged the heroin from his body during the last two days. The drugs had been wrapped in 11 plastic packets. Yiu was admitted to Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre on Wednesday on charges of trafficking in dangerous drugs. He claimed to have bought the heroin for more than $1,500 before his admission to the reception centre. The spokesman said Yiu might still have drugs in his body. ?Investigations by the department are continuing into whether Yiu still has more dangerous drugs concealed,? he said. Yiu has been moved to an isolation cell for closer observation. The case has been reported to police, the spokesman added. In 2005, the department made 88 seizures of dangerous drugs, with most of them discovered in places like the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre. Health experts say heroin is a highly addictive drug that can cause respiratory arrest and other serious side-effects. Overdoses can be fatal.
