The pastries, scones and biscuits displayed behind the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the new Saffron bakery are tempting enough to make passers-by stop and stare. Shop owner Sally Krantz, a self-taught pastry chef from Oregon in the United States, makes all the pastries and biscuits in the shop. It's the second branch of Saffron - the original opened in Tai Tam about five years ago. Popular items include meringues, which come in coconut, lemon and chocolate flavours ($6 each), oversized molasses and chocolate-chip cookies ($10 to $15), cinnamon rolls ($15), scones (lemon, apple and strawberry, $10) and brownies with white chocolate and pecans ($15). The shop also sells freshly made salads, sandwiches, quiches and homemade jam ($55). The variety of cakes changes daily, but might include New York cheesecake ($35 a slice or $250 for a whole cake) or lemon pound cake ($250). Krantz also caters for parties, charging about $75 to $200 a person, depending on the size of the group and choice of pastries. Saffron is open from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. It's at 34 Hoi Kwong Street, Quarry Bay, tel: 2561 6695. The original outlet is at shop G20, Red Hill Plaza, 3 Red Hill Road, Tai Tam, tel: 2813 6234.
