The family of a Chinese herbalist who created a brand of rheumatism ointment had tried to cheat the man out of the company he founded more than 35 years ago, a court heard yesterday.
Wong To-yick, a Chinese herbalist and bone-setting specialist since 1967, filed a writ seeking damages from his son, Tinly Wong Tin-chee.
Mr Wong claimed that in 1995 or early 1996, Tinly Wong had deceived him into reducing his majority stake in the Wong To Yick Wood Lock Ointment company.
According to the writ, Tinly Wong allegedly told his father, who held a 51 per cent stake at the time, that the company would be frozen for two to three years by the government when Mr Wong died, paralysing operations.
On that basis, Wong To-yick had reduced his stake and transferred shares to his family.
Wong To Yick Wood Lock Ointment Ltd was named after its most popular product, an ointment Mr Wong - who is now in his 90s - invented in 1968. It is used as a remedy for rheumatism and other aches and pains.
