SCMP Reporter

The annual Sports Day of our school was held on  November 18 and 22 at Tai Hing Tang Siu Kin Stadium.

Nearly  1,000 students and more than  20 teachers took part in various track and field events.

The stands were decorated with colourful banners  featuring cartoon characters and ornaments designed by the house committees to encourage their members. Each house had its own stickers and ornaments.

All the athletes  tried their best in the competitions and the  crowds  in the stands shouted loudly to encourage their house members.

Besides the inter-house competitions, we also had inter-class relays and a 2,060-metre Happy Race to raise funds for school improvement.

Red House  won the overall championship, while Blue House won the Best Co-operation and Best Performance awards and the highest number of individual titles.

Guest-of-honour Fu Mingxia, the four-times gold medal winner  at the Olympics, shared her experiences with us and encouraged the athletes to try their best. She was surrounded by  her many fans who  wanted to have their photos taken with her in the stadium.

Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School

The Annual General Meeting and Opening Ceremony of the Hong Kong Union for Young Leaders (HKUYL) was held at Queen's College on  November 26.

Apart from marking the official start of the new year,  the event  also provided  an opportunity for the outgoing and incoming executive committees of the union to convene and report on functions held  last year and plans for  this year. The handover ceremony also symbolised the resignation of the  previous committee and the commencement of the newly established committee.

Guest-of-honour  Steven Codrington, the principal of Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong, alumni of the union and other school representatives were invited to  the occasion.

During his speech, Mr  Codrington shared his views on leadership with us.

He  said leadership was a combination of persuasion and compulsion. He also asked  young people not to complain about the world, but instead to work hard to make a difference, as  we all have much more potential than we  think we do.

HKUYL chairman Peter Lui said  members were  inspired by Mr  Codrington's speech to think about the different qualities of a good leader.

At the general meeting,  Form Four members were given a brief introduction to the  HKUYL through  a series of games and projects. The theme for this year - Dare to believe, dare to achieve - was also introduced to all the union members.

Joanna Yu, vice-president of the union, said this theme represented the union's faith  that every Form Four member has the capability to realise their dreams,  pursue their goals in life and  become genuine leaders in society.

The HKUYL is a member-oriented youth organisation comprising 28 member schools. Since 1992,  the union has been working diligently to inspire tomorrow's leaders today.  The organisation aims  to help young students   discover their own definitions of the word 'leadership'.

The 35th Athletics Meet of Pui Shing Catholic Secondary School was held on November 2 and 3 at Tin Shui Wai Sports Stadium.

The number of participants was encouraging and at its historic peak: 677 out of more than 1,000 students. Nine new records were set.

The keen competition started before the meet, with Ruby House having the highest number of participants in all sports categories.

The athletes of Emerald House, Sapphire House and Topaz House had to try very hard  to beat the Ruby House athletes.

While the participants were busy preparing for their events, the cheering teams also worked very hard to  encourage the athletes. At the end, Emerald House won the Best Cheering Group award and the stand decoration contest.

Apart from the cheering slogans, each house made a mascot to represent their house. Those mascots were well-received by students.

The closing ceremony and the prize presentation marked the end of the meet. Ruby House  was the overall champion.

It was our honour to have Yeung Siu-hung, the principal of St Joseph's Anglo-Chinese School, and Fu Yin-shun, the chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association, as our guests.
