President Hu Jintao visited the Communist Party's revolutionary base outside Yanan in Shaanxi province on Lunar New Year's Eve to show his concern over the lack of rural prosperity. Mr Hu visited Red Army veterans in an old people's home, joined farmers in folk dancing and made glutinous rice cakes, or niangao, in a farmer's home. Xinhua quoted him as saying the central government had not forgotten farmers. 'We still have to inherit the excellent traditions of the veterans of the Red Army, despite living in different eras,' Mr Hu told 90-year-old female war veteran Liu Tianyou . After celebrating the eve of the Year of the Dog with farmers, Mr Hu visited the home of farmer Kang Haifa, 51, where he helped the family to make niangao. 'The goal of building a new socialist countryside is to ensure farmers become rich more quickly,' Mr Hu said. 'I hope villagers' living standards will improve each year.' Premier Wen Jiabao spent Lunar New Year's Eve visiting poor residents in Guozhuang village, Heze, in Shandong province, and talking to doctors about a farmers' medical scheme.
