Northeastern China was bracing for a cold snap last night, with the temperature in Mohe , Heilongjiang, forecast to plummet to minus 39 degrees Celsius, the official start of spring according to tradition. Cold air from Siberia has been swooping north this month, with temperatures across the northeast falling by more than 10 degrees. Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning, recorded a low of minus 29 degrees in the past week. A Shenyang student said the first couple of days of the Lunar New Year had been very warm. 'We all thought it signalled the arrival of spring,' she said. 'But suddenly it's freezing again.' But the cold spell is good news for some. At Harbin's Ice and Snow World, visitor arrivals from other cities are up by 40 per cent compared with last year, according to Xinhua. The cold weather will continue next week, with snow forecast for the northeast.
