Local indie duo Primary Shapes are not your typical guitar-smashing band. Their music combines the aesthetics of pop elements with avant-garde concepts. The group's latest artistic endeavour, Here There Everywhere, is a DVD that unveils the group's emotional roller coaster over the past five years. But those who expect the conventional or sappy videos of MTV will be disappointed because it is devoid of rock stars striking cool poses. Instead, it contains visuals that evolve and synchronise with the music. The music is an atmospheric fusion of mesmerising melodies, beautiful guitar lines, poetic lyrics in English and new technology. Primary Shapes is the first group in Hong Kong to use the 5.1 surround sound format, which results in a fuller soundscape. Personal favourite Yellow I is a poetic and tranquil piece with crystal-clear vocals. Another standout is Green, an alluringly dark piece with male and processed female vocals that create a haunting feeling. It may take awhile to digest and appreciate Primary Shapes' musical concept. It's not easy listening music that you can sing along to, but a bit of imagination will go a long way.
