Understanding body language

There's a lot of truth to the old saying 'what you see is what you get'. Studies show that about 90 per cent of communication is non-verbal. Our body language - posture, facial expressions and gestures - tells others how we really feel and what type of person we are. That's why it's important to learn to read other people's non-verbal messages and to be aware of your own.

Posture

You have probably seen various postures among your schoolmates: The students with slumped shoulders who prefer not to draw attention to themselves, the ones who shuffle along the hall like they are too tired to lift their feet, or those who sit in class with crossed arms looking bored. Your posture not only tells others how you are feeling but also gives clues about the type of person you are. Standing straight sends the message that you are confident, energetic and ready for the world, whereas hunching forward gives the impression that you are shy, lethargic or too tired to care about anything. So stand tall with your shoulders back and head held high. It will make you look and feel better, and also send a positive message to others.

The hands

Beware of hands that have a life of their own ... fidgeting with objects such as pens and paper, twirling a strand of hair or twiddling the thumbs. People who can't keep their hands still communicate that they are either nervous or bored. On the other hand, if your hands are too tightly clasped, you will come across as tense and uptight. The way you shake hands also sends a message. A limp handshake that feels like a dead fish suggests shyness, while too strong a grip says you are aggressive. The best handshake is a firm one that tells people that you are confident and willing to talk.
