America's biggest sporting event, the Super Bowl, will be contested in Detroit this morning. Here is a guide to the action.

AT STAKE - National Football League Championship for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

PARTICIPANTS - Pittsburgh Steelers (American Football Conference or AFC) and Seattle Seahawks (National Football Conference or NFC). This is the sixth appearance for Pittsburgh and the first  for Seattle.

SITE - Ford Field, Detroit. This is the first game played in Detroit. The 1982 Super Bowl was played in Pontiac, Michigan.

SEATING CAPACITY - 67,500.

KICKOFF - 7.25am today (Hong Kong time)

TV - The game will be  televised in 230 countries.

PLAYER SHARE - Winners: US$73,000  per man. Losers: US$38,000  per man.

PLAYER UNIFORMS - AFC will be the home team, will use the South bench, and will have their choice of wearing their coloured or white jersey. The Steelers will wear white.

SUDDEN DEATH - If the game is tied at regulation time - 60 minutes - it will continue in sudden-death overtime. The team scoring first (by safety, field goal, or touchdown) will win. At the end of regulation playing time, the referee will immediately toss a coin at the centre of the field.  The captain of the NFC team (the visiting team) will call the toss. Following a three-minute intermission after the end of the regular game, play will continue by 15-minute periods with a two-minute intermission between each such overtime period with no half-time intermission. The teams will change goals between each period.
