MILLIONS OF CHINESE are richer thanks to the booming economy. And they are willing to spend more to make sure they get products of the highest quality. The firm has ambitious expansion plans in the mainland, and is recruiting Hong Kong professionals who have technical, administrative and marketing experience. Group administration and personnel manager Evelyn Cheung said: 'Our business in China has been expanding rapidly with the development of new products. So we have a strong demand for people with international exposure and a passion for the industry.' The company has regional headquarters in Hong Kong and Germany. It designs, manufactures and sells more than 50 brands of luxury items and fashion accessories in about 100 countries. Some of its popular brands are Goldpfeil, Junghans, Esprit and Mexx. The company has 14 major production facilities, which employ about 7,000 employees worldwide, including four factories in Shenzhen. There are about 3,000 employees in China. EganaGoldpfeil has been expanding its presence in the mainland over the past decade. Apart from exporting products from its factories, the company is selling select brands in the mainland. There are 14 Goldpfeil retail outlets, including one in Qingdao and another in Beijing. In the new round of recruitments, there are mainland-based positions for candidates with middle-management experience in industrial engineering, production planning and co-ordination, and plant engineering. There are also entry-level openings for a department manager, an assistant manager in administration and personnel, a sales and marketing manager, and a business development officer. Applicants should expect to be based in Shenzhen. They should be ready for extensive domestic and international travel. Candidates must be fluent in Putonghua and English. Philip Lee, corporate planning manager for EganaGoldpfeil, said: 'They [chosen candidates] need expertise in the field, and should have personalities that match our company values.' He said the company valued international collaboration and expected candidates to have the ability to work in teams. 'At the moment, in terms of technical and management expertise, we feel very comfortable with our Hong Kong staff,' Mr Lee said. Hong Kong employees hold a significant proportion of management positions in the mainland. They either make frequent cross-border trips or have moved to the mainland. EganaGoldpfeil offers candidates opportunities to get international exposure and build expertise in multibrand management. 'Our product development team in China has to collaborate with other teams around the world and many of our brands have a strong European heritage,' Mr Lee said. He said the number of retail outlets in China would increase and the company's acquisition policy would ensure new brands, such as Salamander, were introduced over time. Staff would also get the opportunity to learn and implement different types of branding strategies. Although the company is recruiting for specific positions, it welcomes applications from interested candidates throughout the year. Ms Cheung said pay packages were competitive. Many Hong Kong professionals are considering moving to the mainland. A majority of manufacturing facilities have been relocated there, and that means better career opportunities. Working in a new place will have its challenges. Hongkongers will have to overcome the language barrier, and work in a different work culture and environment. 'They will need determination to develop their careers in the mainland. The company makes every effort to provide an environment that helps them adjust as soon as possible,' Ms Cheung said. Mr Lee said the mainland's importance as a production centre and consumer market would continue to grow.
