NORTHERN Telecom's business ties with China grew substantially just a few months after signing a framework memorandum of understanding with the mainland to help modernise its telecommunications infrastructure.

The latest developments include another large sale of DMS central office switching systems, an in-depth technical seminar on Northern Telecom's technology for Chinese experts and the signing of a technology co-operation agreement.

Under the agreement, Northern Telecom is providing telecommunications equipment to the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT). The equipment, which includes a DMS-100 Super Node telecommunications switch and a Companion CT-2 wireless telephone system, will support scientists and engineers engaged in telecommunications research.

The DMS-100 SuperNode switch and Companion wireless telephone system are among the most advanced of their kind. The DMS-100 switch is the world's most powerful digital switch and is being widely adopted in China's telecommunications market. Northern Telecom's Companion system is the world's first low-power digital wireless communications system.

The research and development centre will carry out advanced R&D projects funded by Northern Telecom and BUPT.

In addition, the agreement calls for collaborative research that will include prominent telecommunications scholars from BUPT working at BNR's research laboratories in Ottawa, Canada. Other provisions will include student exchanges, research grants and students scholarships.

''The co-operation between BUPT and Northern Telecom is essential to the expanding modernisation of our telecommunications,'' Zhu Xianghua, president of BUPT said.
