To paraphrase a wise quote: 'Good relations aren't based on total honesty, but on sensible reticence.'

While no one can argue with the need for, and the desirability of, freedom of speech, there are topics that ought to be left alone.

Many Europeans are passionate about secularism, while many Muslims are passionate about their religion. What is the point of instigating a clash of these seemingly irreconcilable passions?

If the purpose was to promote debate, surely a lighter touch would have sufficed? Being provocative may be par for the course in Denmark, but these days, no culture lives in isolation and thus behaviour needs to be adjusted accordingly. This is neither self-censorship nor capitulation; it is merely good manners.

However, I must also say that hotheads are doing far more harm to Islam than any cartoon could ever do. Wouldn't it be better to demonstrate one's displeasure peacefully and aim it at those culpable? And surely Islam's much-vaunted tolerance is reserved only for those who show respect.
