Ross Jamison's first foray into single-seat cars gained momentum after he blitzed the track during five days of initial testing at the Zhuhai International Circuit.
The 15-year-old Hong Kong teenager, who last year completed a highly successful season in karts, exceeded all expectations in a Formula Renault, setting lap times comparable to more seasoned drivers.
The King George V School student was only fractionally slower than his racing instructor, Philippe Descombes, one of the fastest drivers at the track and a former champion driver.
Jamison is currently seeking funds to complete a full season racing in Formula Renault in China and has already secured several technical sponsors, although he still has a long way to go before reaching his target of $1 million.
