What is the best way to get along with my parents? All we seem to do is argue.

Dear Peter,

Thanks for your e-mail. How to get along with parents is quite a normal question for a teenager

to ask.

As we get older, our parents can often become the ones we are most comfortable arguing with because they are the closest to us.

The best way to get along with your parents is to try and see things from their point of view. You need to remember that before you were a teenager, you relied 100 per cent on your parents to do everything for you, but as you grow up, you start to become more independent.

This can be very difficult for parents and it's hard for them to let go.

So often, they respond in a way that can make you angry because they don't know how to communicate with you.

It's a good idea to sit down and try to openly communicate with your parents. Let them share their point of view and then you share your point of view and try to come to a compromise about what you are trying to talk about.

You could also share your frustrations with your parents about this and you could ask them what they think needs to happen for you to get along better.

Exams are such a stressful time. We are preparing all the time for them and I never seem to do anything I enjoy anymore. It just seems like all I do is study, study, study. There must be more to life than just study.

Yes, you are right, there is more to life than just study. The key is balance.

School should teach you a really important lesson in life - how to balance study and social life.

When you one day go into a career, if you don't learn how to have good time management now, you'll be asking the same question, but it won't be about study, it will be about work.

An important thing to remember is that you need to work out what your priorities are.

While at school, one of your priorities will be to get good grades, so you'll need to determine how many hours in your week you want to spend  on this.

Write a list of all the things you'd like to do other than study and draw up a time-table,  so you don't miss out on enjoying a social life as well.

If you become too consumed with study, you'll end up feeling down and depressed and in the long run will find it hard to make good friends. Don't forget to give yourself a break.
