I REFER to Carol Yeung's letter headlined ''Think again before emigrating'' (South China Morning Post, November 25).

It is obvious there are many people in Hong Kong who are concerned about their future here and do not want to live under Chinese rule. But just because people feel that way does not mean that they, as Miss Yeung puts it, ''should leave''.

I believe the majority of people in Hong Kong are concerned about their future and the future of Hong Kong itself under Chinese rule. I also believe these feelings of uncertainty are justified.

The future of Hong Kong lies within what makes this city so great and prosperous while the rest of the world is decaying morally, socially and economically.

The fortunate few who are in the position to leave are some of the people who contribute the most to Hong Kong, or potentially contribute the most ; namely the hard working middle-class families and the well-educated graduates. Many Western countries welcome industrious entrepreneurs and the last thing Hong Kong's future needs is a brain drain.

There should be an attempt to persuade these people to remain in the territory and to have faith instead of telling them to give up and find a new home.
