RONNY YEUNG is due to graduate from the Vocational Training Council in June with an Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design and Product Development. He talks about his studies and experience:
Why did you choose the Vocational Training Council? Because of its long history and because its fashion design programme has a good reputation.
Did the programme live up to its reputation? Yes. It is an impressive and practical programme. I am able to apply 80 per cent of everything I learnt to the real world. The course also teaches practical and useful business skills such as marketing and business English. It provided me with all the fundamentals necessary to develop my career.
What plans do you have to kick-start your career? I am working on designs and prototypes for my own couture collection and doing some designs for ready-to-wear garments targeted at teenage girls in Taiwan and Singapore.
What working experience have you had so far as a designer? I did an internship with fashion company Indian Rose in Italy and worked for French-based haute couture designer Farah Angsana, as her assistant in Hong Kong. I am currently working as an assistant designer for ShangHai 1930.
Who inspires you? Internationally, John Galliano, Valentino, Viktor & Rolf, Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford, Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent and Manolo Blahnik. Locally, my boss Billy Chan, Barney Cheng, Dorian Ho and William Tang.
