asm pacific boss turns eager scribe and plugs book above the line

ASM Pacific Technology chief executive Patrick Lam Si-pong was beaming yesterday, for a couple of reasons. His book, Soaring Like Eagles, celebrating his company's 30th anniversary, had just hit the shelves.

Mr Lam and his team can be credited with transforming a humble chip company into the world's No1 assembly and packaging equipment supplier with a market capitalisation of $16.2 billion.

But what made Mr Lam doubly proud was co-writing the book with son Edmund, a professor of the University of Hong Kong's faculty of electrical and electronic engineering.

'Instead of delegating to a ghostwriter, teaming up with my son to author a business book is a daring endeavour uncommon in this part of the world,' Mr Lam told journalists in a letter to publicise the book, which incorporates the name of one of ASM's high-flying products.

The father-and-son combo may have been inspired by former chairman of Applied Materials James Morgan, who, together with his son Jeffrey, wrote a book called Cracking the Japanese Market: Strategies for Success in the New Global Economy in 1991.
