Tenor and choir conductor Chen Liang, pictured with pupils at Keen Mind Kindergarten in Kowloon Tong, found a magic wand to teach children Putonghua - the power of music. His students won several prizes in a national singing contest in Beijing earlier this month, while Mr Chen received an award for his contribution to the development of arts in China from an organisation consisting of various arts bodies and was invited to become an executive member of the Artist Association of China. Mr Chen, a music graduate from Shanxi University, who moved to Hong Kong in the mid-1990s, said music tapped children's potential, including their language ability. 'Children are born natural communicators. Music stirs their interest and enables them to pick up Putonghua quickly,' he said. Mr Chen runs a music studio in Causeway Bay, offering music classes to children and adults.
