Paul Leary recently found his stint as Moonie the Moon Bear, mascot of Animals Asia, a little stifling when the visiting Tasmanian got trapped inside his bear suit. Leary was doing a favour for his sister, Angela, who had organised Moon Bear Rock in Delaney's Irish pub in Wan Chai earlier this month. It was revealed this week that the evening raised $131,484 to free moon bears milked for their bile from horrific conditions in cages on the mainland. After traipsing the streets of Wan Chai in his bear suit to drum up interest, a hot and sweaty Leary returned to the pub only to find he couldn't get his bear snout off. Friends and family pitched in to pull Moonie's friendly face off Leary's head, but couldn't find the release. Leary, by now slumped on the floor, tried to help by pointing at it, but the huge paws on the suit meant his would-be rescuers couldn't figure out what he was pointing at. Eventually Bernard Curry, the show's MC, managed to remove the head, leaving a very relieved Leary panting for breath. Despite the mishap, he reckons he'll be back for next year's event. 'I've advised them to cut a space in the suit near the paws so you can get out of the suit without help,' he said.
