Funky Skunk

This one-hour, one-track work from the  American DJ, electronic music producer and re-mixer chronicles a mere glimpse of  his eclectic inclusions in his rumoured personal 90-million track collection.

Drawing as it does on mostly 1970s and 80s funk and hip-hop, Funky Skunk's relentless mix contains the occasional lull when the listener can draw breath, as some of these tracks border on a laid-back tempo. Briefer pauses occur with spaced-out late 1960s-tinged rock, blues and bossa nova fragments.

And, for a well-welded minute or so, the mood even swings through  a dirty grunge guitar interlude.

The album, first made available as part of a collectors' package with  T-shirt, badges and stickers, has recently been given a limited CD- only release. Within  15 minutes, the listener knows  this is a master of DJ mix-craft, particularly if he or she makes it without skipping through a particularly hard, raucous ragga-inspired couple of minutes.

Those curious about the origin of Skunk's hundreds of snippets and samples will be frustrated: the sleeve makes no reference to sources and nor does Shadow's website. Pretty near the start, though, one of a few blasts of gangsta rap appears, with a sped-up excerpt of My Baby's Mamma by Three 6 Mafia.

Little big-name pop-rap here, but recognisable Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Silkk  the Shocker slide by.

A lonesome slow-hand electric guitar solo - uncredited, of course - appears unexpectedly but seamlessly at the album's conclusion, wrapping up a pretty hot hour.



DJ Shadow
