Oasis, AsiaWorld Arena,

Chek Lap Kok, One night only

Eight years to the day since they last played Hong Kong, Oasis last night became the first band to perform at the new AsiaWorld Arena.

Happily for the thousands of fans who made the journey to Chek Lap Kok, both band and venue proved they have what it takes.

Much has been made of the city's lack of a world-class venue for concerts of this size, with the Queen Elizabeth Stadium and the Convention and Exhibition Centre  falling  short in  capacity and acoustic quality.

The AsiaWorld Arena, however, fits the bill perfectly and Oasis made the most of the impressively sonorous sound system.

After a rapturous welcome from the boisterous crowd, which filled about two-thirds of the arena's 13,500 capacity, Oasis began a near-two-hour set with the swaggering Turn Up The Sun, taken from their 2005 album, Don't Believe The Truth.

Two tracks that spanned the band's career followed - last year's British No1 hit Lyla  and Bring It On Down  from their blistering 1994 debut, Definitely Maybe  - a double whammy that seemed to set the tone for  the show.

After a period that saw  Oasis in a state of flux, the band seem to have realised  what their fans want.  Almost the entire set consisted of songs from Definitely Maybe, the hugely popular follow up (What's the Story) Morning Glory?,   The Masterplan (B-Side Collection) and their latest work. In fact, the only song from their other three albums to be heard  was playful ballad Songbird  from 2002's Heathen Chemistry.

The likes of Live Forever, Acquiescence and Wonderwall  had the audience singing along,  while Cigarettes & Alcohol  and Morning Glory seemed to strike a  special chord.  Fans in the standing areas were clearly having a ball, bouncing and waving at every opportunity, while those in the cheap seats  surged to the front, much to the consternation of the shell-shocked stewards.

Oasis appeared to thrive on the atmosphere, with Liam, bantering  incomprehensibly with the audience between songs.  Despite Liam providing the bulk of the band's energy, it was a welcome change of pace when the younger Gallagher left centre stage to his brother Noel, who sang Mucky Fingers  and The Masterplan to generous applause. Noel  also supplied the  highlight, raising the roof with the triumphant Don't Look Back in Anger, after which a cover of The Who's My Generation  sealed  a memorable evening's entertainment.
