The contemporary look is pushing out the Spanish style
Owners of village houses are dressing up their properties with extra investment in interiors and exteriors so they can sell them in the luxury market.
The days when Spanish-style houses with red-tiled roofs, white stucco walls and little in the way of interior finish were the vogue are fading away, and the demand now is for village houses with whirlpool baths on the roof and attractive gardens.
'Village houses in contemporary design and a good location can sell for 10 to 15 per cent more than the traditional Spanish-style house,' said Paul Lam, property agent at Ka Shing Property, which focuses on village houses in Sai Kung.
He said the owner of a three-storey 1,050 sqft village house on Sai Sha Road, Sai Kung, was asking for $4.2 million for his property. 'Some owners also provide fitted kitchens, air-conditioners and nice interior decor to make their properties extra attractive,' he said.
Village houses are found in Tuen Mun, Tai Po, Yuen Long, Sai Kung and Tseung Kwan O. Buyers may purchase the whole block of three storeys or a single storey.
