Breast cancer and Miriam Yeung Chin- wah are the two ingredients that make 2 Become 1 stand out. It's extremely rare that mainstream fare tackles a theme with even a remote connection to everyday realities. Yeung is more than up to the challenge of playing a woman faced with the prospect of losing a breast and possibly her life.
What keeps the comedy-drama from achieving more poignancy is its lack of sophistication and a tendency to offset the audience's perceived aversion for the subject matter with a surfeit of ostensibly commercial elements.
Fung Chi-keung's script, from a story by Ivy Ho inspired by Xi Xi's novel Mourning for the Breast (the movie's original title), works best when centred on Bingo Leung (Yeung), a tough advertising executive who leads a Sex and the City existence with her best friends (including TV actor Louie Castro, who delivers a camp yet not stereotypical performance as Bingo's gay friend). An encounter with doctor Vincent Cheung (Richie Jen Hsien-chi) leads to the discovery of a lump in her breast, and a radical change in Bingo's priorities.
