The School of Continuing and Professional Education (Scope) at City University has launched several new degree and short courses in recent months. These include a foundation degree in science (FdSc) in fire safety engineering, through the University of Central Lancashire, in Britain.
The degree is targeted at those joining building-related professions and fire safety organisations. It can also be used as a stepping stone to the second year of a bachelor degree in fire engineering, also offered through Scope.
Students gain a general knowledge in fire engineering and the industry. Subjects include thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, engineering analysis, fire and built environment, fire engineering science, and fire safety management and legislation.
Applicants should have a pass in one HKALE subject or two passes in HKALE AS subjects including English, and five HKCEE passes.
Workplace mediation skills is a new course from Scope comprising workshops and seminars. The course runs over 10 weeks (three hours per session) and covers group dynamics in conflicts and employment disputes; approaches and control in mediation; key phases in achieving agreement; negotiation and mediation preparation skills, and the application of skills.
Applicants should have at least a year's experience in business or a related field, and a recognised degree in any discipline. The course costs $4,950.
