Zacky Leung of Happy Valley questioned why transport officials approved an obvious design fault with seat belts in minibuses, while police enforce their use. He said this might prove dangerous.

'I noticed that there is a design fault for the seat belt in minibuses. All the buckles for the window seats are installed on the window side [instead of the aisle side],' he said.

'If the minibus is hit during an accident, the exterior body might cave in, squeezing the buckle. The passenger would then be unable to access the buckle to free himself or herself. Buckling up in a minibus might become a death trap if fire breaks out after an accident.

'The government is now urging all passengers to buckle up on minibuses. Has the government investigated the safety of the seat belt before enacting such a regulation? Are they pushing citizens into a death trap?

'One can check out the design of airplanes, private cars, tour buses, etc. Without any exception, all seat belts for window seats are installed on the aisle side. Never would any seat belts for the window seats be installed on the window side. I hope we do not have to wait until someone gets burnt to death before something gets done.'
