For Wu Jisong, dean of the school of economics and management at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, green consumption is an indisputable part of building a 'recycle economy'.
'Green consumption means a new consumer culture in line with a harmonious coexistence with nature, which is composed of resources, the environment and the society,' said Professor Wu, a former official at the Ministry of Water Resources.
As chairman of the Beijing Association of Recycle Economy Development and an adviser to the Beijing Olympic Committee's global impact research project, Professor Wu is renowned for promoting the practical application of recycle economics and knowledge economics.
Recycle economics looks set to be highlighted in the economic and social blueprint for the next five years, to be adopted at the annual session of the National People's Congress, now under way in Beijing.
He noted the top leaders had repeatedly stressed the need to sustain rapid economic growth by upgrading or replacing existing production patterns and introducing changes to consumption patterns.
The 2008 Olympic Games provide a good opportunity to promote an energy-saving, environmentally friendly pattern of consumption.
'The framework of recycle economics will begin to emerge in the capital after the 2008 Olympics, and its experience will be a useful reference for the country,' Professor Wu said.
