Three hours before tomorrow's Bahrain Grand Prix, you can slip behind the wheel of any of the racing cars and go for a burn around the track - just by popping down to Central.

The Sideways Driving Club just off Aburthnot Road in Chancery Lane has set up 12 networked, racing cockpit simulators, complete with multi-function steering wheel, stick- shift and adjustable pedal-box. Thanks to the latest technology, the virtual grand prix is updated with real-time race conditions such as weather, tyre wear, fuel consumption and car damage.

So realistic is the ride that Hong Kong racing drivers Matthew Marsh and Darryl O'Young use Sideways' facilities to 'virtually' set up their Porsche Carrera Cup cars, and familiarise themselves with Sideways' Macau GP track.

The club is putting in another cockpit next month, and you can drive all of the Formula 1 races.

The cost is rather more affordable that hitting the real circuit: $550 per hour, $1,000 for two hours and $1,500 for three hours. There are discounts for group bookings, and a number of teams regularly compete.

And it's not just grand prix racing on offer. You can choose from all sorts of vehicles, including historic F1 cars, Porsche GT3, rally cars and Le Mans prototypes, says Sideways partner Carsten Widderich.
