Professors at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and staff at the Hong Kong Institute of Education are angry about education - their children's.

A sizeable group of overseas Chinese and other expatriates working in academia in the New Territories have been stunned to find there are no suitable secondary school places for their non-Chinese-speaking children.

Ironically, while local schools in the area face under-enrolment and the prospect of closure, English Schools Foundation and international schools are bursting at the seams.

The need for international education serving the corporate sector based largely in Hong Kong Island is generally accepted. But the New Territories are less well-served, hence the fury among academics and others who were expecting their children to automatically transfer from the primary Hong Lok Yuen International School to the ESF's Sha Tin College, only to find there were no places.

This may be an exceptional year as the ESF's first private independent school, Renaissance College, is due to open in Ma On Shan in August. Families with older children at Sha Tin College are reluctant to enrol children in the new school for matters of convenience, and because they regard it as an unknown quantity. Once that school is established, it may absorb some of the excess demand. The government has also widened choice by giving the International Christian School a new site in Sha Tin and Yew Chung Hong Kong International School one in Kowloon Tong, both due to open within the next two years.

However, some in the Education and Manpower Bureau may be surprised to learn that the strong evangelical missions of these schools won't be regarded as alternatives for those seeking ESF-style secular education.
