Around the stage for just 10 days

Steve Cray

Ryutaro Yanagita didn't have to travel very far around the world to end up in the clutches of the exotic Folies Bergere dancers - no further than Pacific Place in fact.

For the young actor and exotic artistes were rehearsing there this week for Faust theatre's version of the musical based on the Jules Verne 1872 classic Around The World In 80 Days. Ryutaro, 12, who plays intrepid traveller Phileas Fogg's sidekick was excited that he was following in the footsteps of one of Hong Kong's most famous actors. 'I'm going to play Passepartout, also acted by Jackie Chan,' he said. Chan played the part in the 2004 Walt Disney version.

With a cast of 40 pupils and 43 adults, the musical follows the adventures of Fogg and Passepartout as they race from London to Paris, Egypt, Hong Kong, Japan, Mumbai, Mexico and New York in 80 days to win a bet. The musical will be staged at the Lyric Theatre, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, from March 17 to 26. For more details, visit www.80days.hk
