Sniffer dog 'led investigators to serial killer 12 months ago'

Families of five of the children believed raped and killed by an alleged serial killer have vowed to sue police in the northeast city of Jiamusi, Heilongjiang province, for dereliction of duty.

Gong Runbo, 32, was arrested last week in the city on suspicion of killing five teenagers, according to the Jiamusi Public Security Bureau.

But Wang Zhibin, grandfather of one of the five, Wang Shengli, said Gong was linked with his daughter's disappearance 12 months ago and that the families of the victims would file a lawsuit against the Songlin police station for not conducting a thorough investigation much earlier.

Ten-year-old Wang Shengli did not return home after school last March and her grandfather reported her missing to the Songlin station.

Mr Wang said there was no police investigation until local media reported the child's disappearance. Officers used a police dog to conduct a search and the dog followed the girl's scent to Gong's house but no action was taken.

'The dog stayed in the suspect's home but the police simply investigated the site and left,' Mr Wang said.
