Tropicalia: A Revolution in Brazilian Sound

(Soul Jazz)

As military dictatorship took hold in Brazil in the 1960s, another movement was taking shape.

Led by the likes of the band Os Mutantes and the singer-songwriter Gilberto Gil, the Tropicalia movement started life as a group of like-minded individuals who wanted to shake up the home-grown music scene. But it wasn't long before their influence was felt among the youth of the time and many - Gil included - were either thrown into jail or chose to flee into exile.

The Soul Jazz label has compiled a selection of recordings made from 1968 to 1970 from those in the vanguard of the movement - and a stunning selection it is. Brazil's bossa nova movement of the late 50s hangs on almost every chord but you can feel what was going on in the rest of the world - from psychedelia to pure and simple pop - coursing through its veins.
