Home-grown designer Douglas Young Chi-chiu likes to make people smile. The founder of lifestyle store G.O.D. said humour is important in his art.
Born in Hong Kong, Young trained as an architect at Britain's Sheffield University and the country's oldest independent school, The Architectural Association.
He founded concept store G.O.D. (Goods of Desire) in 1996 to sell contemporary furniture and homeware that give modern design a Hong Kong identity.
Young was recently invited to curate Mega Crossover - 4 X Home, an exhibition presented by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. He worked with four well-known local artists - Mathias Woo, Wing Shya, Eric Kot and Chip Tsao - to turn the venue into four fun-filled 'homes'.
'Hong Kong lacks a museum culture. In western countries, going to museums is part of people's lifestyle. I want to attract people who don't usually go to museums,' he said.
'Museums don't only display artefacts that are difficult to relate to. They can be entertaining, too.'
