Q What can be done to improve animal welfare?

My name is Louis Saunders, I am 10 years old. I disagree that Ngan Siu-yum should be sentenced for three months - it should be longer. The animal is dead and was severely beaten, only for barking. I have a little dog called Bel and she is very mischievous, but I don't smack or beat her.

I think we can protect animals better by looking more closely at the condition of pet shops and having more protective rules for animals. Please think about what I said.

Louis Saunders, Happy Valley

I am writing in reply to a letter by Bernard Lo, published in your City section yesterday.

After reading the letter I would like to tell him that I worked as a veterinarian for the SPCA for almost four years, having spent many hours in their 'killing room', personally being responsible for sending thousands of this city's animals into the afterlife. That this is not a particularly cheerful task is easy to imagine. I can personally attest to the overwhelming nature of this work, and the massive effort by SPCA staff to sort out all these unwanted animals to somehow find them a different fate. This is complicated all the time by a whole host of reasons and, believe me, someone waiting two weeks before reporting a pet missing would be one of the less unusual scenarios I have had to deal with.
